Social media lit up on Thursday as fans mistook football legend Maradona’s death for that of popstar Madonna.
Maradona is regarded as the greatest footballer of all time. He led Argentina to a World Cup victory in 1986, having knocked England out in the quarter final with the infamous 'Hand of God' goal.
The footballer died from a cardiac arrest on Wednesday night at the age of 60. The Argentine government has declared three days of mourning after Maradona's death, with social media teeming with tributes to the charismatic footballer.
However, soon after Maradona's untimely demise, Madonna's name began trending on Twitter and it would seem that some had genuinely confused Maradona with popstar Madonna on account of how similar the two names were spelled.
Considering twitter was flooded with tribute messages for both the legends, the rumour around Madonna's death spread fast and wide on Twitter. Eventually a lot of the people began realising the gaffe and soon jokes about it began doing the rounds on social media.
A Twitter user wrote: "BREAKING: At the age of 62, American singer and Queen of pop' Madonna has been found alive in her house enjoying life’, while another user, sharing a photo of Madonna holding a rugby ball, wrote, “RIP Madonna, Queen of futbol.”
A screenshot of US President Donald Trump’s tweet for Maradona has set the internet ablaze. The morphed tweet reads, “Very sad to hear about the death of Maradona. A great person. Her music was wonderful. I remember listening to her albums in the early 1980s. Rest In Peace!”
Last week, the Queen of Pop had shared a photo of herself. In the photograph, Madonna has her skirt hiked up showing a bandage and red marks on her hip. She captioned the photo with little information except for "Madame X is a survivor." The photo somehow led her fans to believe she had a hip-replacement surgery.
Meanwhile, closer home, Mollywood actor-cum-singer Madonna Sebastian has been receiving tributes too as a few of her fans also mistook Maradona’s demise for that of Madonna Sebastian’s. The actor, who starred in the Alphone Putharen film Premam and has sung tracks for composers such as Deepak Dev and Gopi Sundar, apart from rich tributes, has been receiving trolls.
But then the actor, who was is not new to trolls. She was trolled for saying in an interview that she swam at the age of one and a half. Her scenes from Premam are also often interspersed with current situations and jokes.
