Jeethu Joseph’s Drishyam 2 was leaked on piracy sites Tamilrockers and Telegram among others two hours after its release on Amazon Prime on February 19. A much anticipated film, the movie’s trailer was also leaked on social media before its scheduled release.
While the movie was completed for release last year, the makers had to delay its release due to the coronavirus scare in the country.
Written and directed by Jeethu, the thriller, said to be a blend of suspense, emotions and family bonding, is produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner of Aashiravad Cinema. Drishyam 2 features an ensemble cast, which includes Meena, Siddique, Asha Sharath, Murali Gopi, Ansiba, Esther and Saikumar.
The sequel to the 2013 film Drishyam, which is about a father (played by Mohanlal), who goes great lengths to cover up the crime committed by his wife and older daughter, Drishyam 2 begins where the first part ended and is expected to give answers to the questions that were left unanswered in Drishyam. Drishyam was remade in several languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and even Sinhala and Mandarin.
This is the first time that big budget Malayalam film is releasing on an OTT platform. According to the film’s director, the ongoing pandemic is a reason why they opted for an OTT release. Disappointed with the leak of the film, Jeethu said that Amazon Prime would look into the incident. Meanwhile, the director is pleasantly surprised with the audience’s response to the film. Some have said that sequel is better than its prequel. Actor Prithviraj is seen gushing about the film on his social media handle. He wrote, “Drishyam 2.Been wanting to say something about the film for a long time now. Guess since the world premiere is just hours away..it’s ok to not hold on any longer. Following up a cult piece of cinema with a sequel is a huge responsibility. And with something like Drishyam, a film that pretty much changed the schematics of the entire industry, the pressure on a proposed 2nd part would have been immense (trust me..I know!). But how gloriously does Jeethu pull it off! Where do you take Georgekutty 6 years down the line? Has his incredible penchant for constructing and living a fictional story softened? Does he make a slip? Does he finally get outsmarted? Does time and law catch up? If you think you already know..you’re in for one hell of a surprise! Fantastically written and conceived..this is Jeethu’s best film after Drishyam! He was the first person I called after watching it. I’m so so happy for you brother! And then, I walked over to my neighbouring apartment to meet a certain someone. Now coming to the small matter of that certain someone..who goes by the name of Mohanlal.. I’ll say just this for now.. This is not the first time a film has been leaked on the Internet. Tamil superstar Vijay’s recent release Master was leaked ahead of the movie’s release in theatres. Master was the first big ticket film to release in theatres since the Covid-19 lockdown. Meanwhile, Telugu romantic drama movie Uppena, which was released in theatres on February 12, has been leaked online on various torrent sites in HD quality. This is a huge blow for the movie, which opened to a good box office collection in theatres amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
