Suriya starrer Soorarai Pottru was featured on the list of 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars. Sudha Kongara's directorial Soorarai Pottru was based on the biography of Captain GR Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan. The movie has entered the Oscar 2021 race in the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and many other categories.
2D Entertainment, Suriya's home banner took to Twitter to make the happy announcement. The post read, "We are elated and thrilled!!! #SooraraiPottru joins OSCARS!!!"
The leading roles in the movie were played by actor Suriya and Aparna Balamurali. Along with Suriya's home banner, the movie was co-produced by Guneet Monga's Sikhya Entertainment. On November 12, the movie was released on the OTT platform Amazon Prime Video.
In the wake of the pandemic, the organisers of the Academy Awards have made certain changes to the rules. Generally, movies released on OTT platforms were not considered. However, due to changes in rules, movies such as Soorarai Pottru got featured in the list.
The movie was the first Tamil film to release on the OTT platform due to Coronavirus. The movie also featured Urvashi, Mohan Babu and Karunas.
