In the age of cooking channels on YouTube, Village Cooking Channel-based out of Chinna Veeramangalam of Pudukottai district in Tamil Nadu — is one of the most popular ones. With over 70 lakh subscribers, the chefs of the channel — V Subramanian, V Murugesan, V Ayyannar, G Tamilselvan and T Muthumanickam, led by their grandfather M Periyathambi — have entertained their viewers with their tasty dishes and captivating methods.

While their episodes are often interesting on their own, Friday’s session had a very special guest. Congress senior leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi joined the team to cook mushroom biryani for the channel’s viewers. The setting for the latest episode was set in Karur, where Rahul joined the team a bit late than decided. Congress MP from Karur Jothimani S joined him at the location, helping him with translation.

Following his arrival and small talk with the chefs, the MP joined the team in making raita, following a style that has become synonymous with the channel. Shouting the ingredients before dropping them, the Wayanad MP added to his Tamil vocabulary “venkayam” (onion), “thayiru” (curd) and “kalluppu” (rock salt) as he proceeded to make raita for the biryani.

Proceeding to sit down on a mat to eat, Rahul spoke with the chefs on their work and about their show. The team expressed their interest in cooking in the United States of America, which Rahul Gandhi said was possible. The Congress leader told them that he could connect the team with a friend in the US, which could help the chefs in fulfilling their dream. Moreover, Rahul also told them that they should take their cooking to many other places around the country.

While their eating, one of the chefs asked Rahul “eppidi irukku” (How is it) to which the Congress MP replied, “Nalla irukku” (it is good). After the meal, he had one last interaction with the team, where the chefs asked him to come when they prepare a huge feast. The MP said that he would love to attend the event, and promised them to get them in contact with his friend in the US for their dream work.

Rahul Gandhi has been in Tamil Nadu as part of their campaign process ahead of the state assembly election. He has been interacting with the rural populace addressing their needs and demands.
