The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the list of 10 best performing police stations in India for the year 2020. The police stations were selected from a total of 16,671 police stations on certain parameters. Nongpok Sekmai Police Station in Manipur has been selected as the best among the country’s police stations for its performance in dealing cases.

The trophy was virtually presented to the Nongpok Sekmai station’s in-charge inspector Keisam Premkumar Mangang by the Home Minister. The Nongpok Sekmai Police Station, which was established in April 2015, received the award on the basis of the station’s performance and citizens’ feedback. Earlier, Manipur’s Nambol and Imphal West city police stations were declared the best stations in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

According to a press release, the list of 10 best performing police stations in India was made in accordance with Prime Minister Modi’s directions while addressing the 2015 Directors General of Police in Gujarat. “The government of India selects the best-performing police stations across the country every year, to incentivise more effective functioning of police stations and bring healthy competition among them,” a statement issued by the home ministry said.

The home minister added that a vast majority of police stations shortlisted from the thousands of police stations in the country were those located in small towns and rural areas.

The top 10 best performing police stations for 2020 are (rank-wise) Jhilmili (Bhaiya Thana) in Chhattisgarh, Sanguem in Goa, Kalighat in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Pakyong in Sikkim, Kanth (Moradabad) in Uttar Pradesh, Khanvel in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Jammikunta Town in Telangana’s Karimnagar district.

The announcement of the 10 best performing police stations was made at the ongoing virtual 55th annual DGPs and IGPs conference, which included the prime minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, among others.

In a tweet, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh wrote, “Congratulations to Nongpok Sekmai PS, Thoubal District, on being conferred the #BestPoliceStationAward2020 of the country by Union Home Ministry. The award is in recognition of the professionalism, hard work, dedication and community-oriented policing by the #Manipur Police.”
