Nearly 18 Covid-19 patients die in Gujarat hospital fire

In the early hours of today, after a fire broke out at a hospital in Gujarat's Bharuch, around 18 Covid patients died. The visuals from the incident area show some patients roasted alive on stretchers and beds.

At 1 am when the fire broke out, the four-storeyed Welfare hospital had around 50 other patients. According to an official, the patients were rescued by locals and firefighters.

While interacting with a media organisation, a police official said, "According to the information received at 6.30 am, the death toll in the tragedy stood at 18. Immediately after the fire, we had confirmation of 12 deaths." Reportedly, the 12 patients in the Covid-19 ward died following the fire and smoke.

The hospital run by a trust is situated 190 kms away from the state capital Ahmedabad. The cause of the fire is yet to be identified. Within an hour, the fire was controlled and around 50 patients were rescued by locals along with the help of firefighters. The patients were shifted to a nearby hospital.
