Former Union Minister and BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand acquitted in connection with the law student sexual harassment case. The Court even acquitted the law student and five others accused in a separate case for blackmailing Chinmayanand and trying to get Rs 5 crore from him.

The Court noted that the victim had turned hostile even during the time of trial against Chinmayananda. The prosecution was unable to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt, said a special judge acquitting the former BJP leader of the charges.

On August 27, 2019, the case against Chinmayananda was filed at Kotwali police station. According to the complaint filed by the victim's father, his daughter who was pursuing LLM in a college run by Chinmayananda ashram was kept in captivity at Shahjahanpur and was allegedly raped.

In the complaint, the victim's father said that since August 23, her mobile phone was switched off and he had found through her Facebook account that she had been threatened by Chinmayanand and his accomplices of her physical harassment and rape. Following the investigation, Chinmayanad was arrested on September 20, 2019, and sent to jail.

Meanwhile, on August 25, 2019, advocate Om Singh had filed a complaint at the same police station against the law student alleging that she had demanded Rs 5 crore as extortion from Chinmayanad.
