BJP MP Ram Swaroop Sharma found dead at New Delhi home, police begin probe

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ram Swaroop Sharma was dead at his home in Delhi on Wednesday morning. The Delhi Police is investigating the case and, there is suspicion that Sharma may have committed suicide.

Delhi Police said that they had received a call from a staffer informing that the 62-year-old MP was found hanging and the door was closed from inside. The police recovered Sharma’s body from Gomti Apartments in New Delhi. Police have started an investigation into the matter.

Sharma was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014 and 2019 from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. Calling Sharma a dedicated leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolence.

Reportedly, Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs Anurag Thakur reached the spot after getting the news. Following Sharma’s demise, the BJP has cancelled the parliamentary party meeting scheduled for today.

With the Parliament session underway, Shiv Sena MP Vinayak Raut gave an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha, demanding an inquiry into Sharma’s death. The Lok Sabha has been adjourned till 1 pm after the House paid tribute to Sharma and ex-MP Dilip Gandhi, who passed away today while undergoing treatment after testing positive for Covid-19.
