Kamal Haasan and his political outfit Makkal Needhi Maiam suffered a hard blow on Christmas, with their General Secretary A Arunachalam officially joining BJP. Arunachalam joined the saffron outfit in the presence of Union Minister of Environment and Forest Prakash Javadekar in Chennai.
Addressing reporters at the venue, Arunachalam said that he was separating from MNM because their views differed from his on the three farm laws. Makkal Needhi Maiam had been taking strong opposition stand against the Bharatiya Janata Party since day one and had opposed the three controversial farm laws. However, according to reports, Arunachalam had told Haasan that the party need not oppose the three laws just because the BJP government passed it. Arunachalam had expressed that the laws are beneficial to farmers.
Meanwhile, the political situation seems to tighten as MK Alagiri has announced floating his party. Alagiri, son of late MK Karunanidhi, has been a rebel of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ever since he was ousted from the party in 2014. He had come to his latest decision soon after meeting with his mother Dayalu Ammal. He had announced that he would make a final decision after discussing with his followers in Madurai. If formed, the party would focus from Madurai, face-off against DMK, and might ally with Rajinikanth’s political outfit.
Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan had denied all association with any ‘kazhagam’ parties, and since Alagiri is planning a DMK rival, there is a possible alliance in the mix. However, the BJP is aiming at an alliance with Rajanikanth, and unless and until the superstar reveals his plans, we have no way of confirming it. The situation as of now is very complicated, but with the BJP hell-bent on settling a foundation in Tamil Nadu with the next election, the situation will be interesting to watch.
