Malayali Maju Varghese was the man behind Joe Biden’s successful presidential campaign. The chief operating officer and senior advisor for Biden, Maju, has served as an assistant to former President Obama for management and administration and as deputy director of advance at the White House, where he managed day-to-day operations.

Maju’s parents migrated from Thiruvalla in Kerala to the United States in the 1970s. While his father, Mathew, drove a cab in New York City and also worked as a security guard, his mother, Saroja, was a nurse. He has a sister called Manju. Maju, who studied political science and economics at the University of Massachusetts, and took his law degree from Hofstra University in New York, has a 14-year-old son, Evan with his wife, Julie.

Maju began his political career when he was working on the Al Gore presidential campaign in 2000 in Nashville, Tennessee and later joined Obama’s advance team in 2008.

Before joining the Obama White House in 2010, for nearly five years Maju was an Associate at Wade Clark Mulcahy LLP, a law firm in New York. Before this, he was a Research Associate at the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

In between joining the Biden campaign, and after leaving the Obama administration, Maju was a Senior Advisor at Dentons based in Washington DC. He then went to be the COO of The Hub Project also in Washington DC.

Maju has brought his years of political experience to the Biden campaign and helped the former Vice President not only win 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries but also helped Biden win the 2020 US Presidential Elections by beating President Donald Trump.
