After Kerala Legislative Assembly’s Privileges and Ethics Committee had recommended action against Poonjar MLA PC George, the MLA, today, said that he accepts the committee’s report. The action had been taken following the MLA’s derogatory comments addressed to a nun who had been allegedly raped by a bishop. The Women’s Commission Chairperson MC Josephine had written a formal complaint against him.

However, speaking as “a Christian”, he says, “I must add that I am accepting the recommendations of the committee despite the fact that I was only reacting to the allegations made against a respected member of our community. Moreover, I have requested a small change in the ethics committee report.”

The Poonjar MLA said that the Church had removed the mentioned women from their fold. “The report notes that I have made comments against a nun, but the Church had removed her from their folds and so she has no right to claim the status. I request that the Speaker would heed my request,” he said. However, Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan told him that regardless of the usage of ‘nun’ or not, the action against him was for derogatory comments against women.
