Industries Minister EP Jayarajan and Higher Education Minister KT Jaleel will appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate on Wednesday for the Assembly bedlam case of 2015. The other accused in the case are former MLA and LDF leaders V Sivankutty, K Ajith, CK Sadasivan, and K Kunhammed.
Except for Jayarajan and Jaleel, the others had already received their bail after they had paid Rs. 35,000 each for the damages done during the brawl. Jaleel and Jayarajan were under treatment for Covid-19. The ministers will be present before the court on Wednesday, and charges against them will be read to them. Bail can only be attained if they pay for the damages.
The incident occurred when, during the UDF government, the then Finance Minister Mani tried to present the budget. The LDF members protested the presentation and resorted to violence at a later point. The images and visuals that emerged from the assembly pointed out the perpetrators, following which, the government handed the case over to the crime branch and they reported damages worth Rs. 2.20 lakh. The investigators categorised the case under the destruction of private property.
After the LDF government came to power in 2016, they pleaded with the Court to withdraw the case, only to receive criticism from the latter. After which, the government recently replaced their counsel.
