Meaningless to blame one person for poll debacle; Covid-19 situation helped LDF, says K Sudhakaran

Senior Congress leader K Sudhakaran has said it is meaningless to blame one individual for United Democratic Front's (UDF) poor performance in the Kerala Assembly election. He said the experienced senior leaders and youth leaders should be appointed as heads of the party.

The senior Congress leader appreciated Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala for fulfilling his duties and responsibilities. “There are various reasons the party fared poorly in the election. The party lost due to problems in the organisation that has existed for a long time. There is no point in criticising a specific individual for that without addressing these issues and finding a solution will hurt the party,” he told a leading Malayalam news channel on Wednesday.

Sudhakaran said that following talks in the political affairs panel meet, the party will take appropriate measures after consulting the Congress high command.

The senior Congress leader claimed that the current Covid-19 condition played a role in the Left Democratic Front’s victory in the recently concluded Kerala Assembly elections.

“The current political climate was beneficial for the CPM. In reality, the peaking Covid 19 pandemic was helpful to the LDF and CPM. The current Covid situation lowered opportunities for Congress workers to work at the grass-root level in Kerala,” Sudhakaran said, adding that CPM workers were able to successfully use the opportunity.

Sudhakaran’s take on the UDF’s poll debacle hours after another senior Congress leader K Muraleedharan said that the Congress has gone through a bigger crisis in the past.

"Congress has gone through big crises in the past also. Even in Punjab and Haryana, the party were in the Opposition for nearly 10 years. But the CPM got a big zero in Bengal and Tripura where they ruled for decades,” Muraleedharan said, adding that Congress will come back to power with full force.
