Long list of names for Rajya Sabha seats; John Brittas, Thomas Isaac, Cheriyan Philip considered

CPM will finalise the candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections in a state secretariat meeting on Friday. The candidates will have to file the nomination next week. This time there are three vacant seats for Kerala. Based on the existing strength in the Assembly, the UDF can nominate one person, while the LDF can file two. In view of the current surge in Covid-19 cases, both fronts are considering to exclude the voting procedures. Thus CPM is said to have decided to field only two candidates.

According to sources, other than party members, CPM is also considering the names of other people. A name that is making the rounds is the managing director of the party channel and the chief minister’s media advisor John Brittas. While the State leadership had suggested Brittas for Rajya Sabha several times, it was the adamant stand by the central leadership to place priority on the party’s senior leaders that came as a barrier between the media person and the parliament. It would seem that the party’s central leadership will decide Brittas’ fate this time around too.

Apparently, a group within the party has recommended KK Ragesh, who led the farmer’s struggle, be nominated of the Rajya Sabha MP post. Others who are being considered for the post include Cheriyan Philip, former SFI office bearer, Dr V Shivadasan, CPM state committee member, Viju Krishnan, Central committee member and CPM Politburo members EP Jayarajan, AK Balan, Thomas Isaac and G Sudhakaran among others.

V Abdul Vahab is said to be the UDF candidate. The deadline to file nominations will end on Tuesday. The election will be held on April 30.
