Locals allege corruption in construction of Women's Recreation Centre at Vazhathope in Idukki

Locals of Idukki's Vazhathope alleges massive corruption in the construction of the women's recreation centre in the district. They claim that not even half of Rs 25 lakh, which was the allotted cost, has been used for the work. The locals have demanded a vigilance probe into the matter.

The construction of this indoor court started in 2017 with hopes of training women athletes at Vazhathope near Cheruthoni. Even after two years, the work did not reach anywhere. According to reports, the District Panchayat Executive Engineer and the contractor claim that the work so far has been done with the allotted money and if more money is allotted, the pending work can be completed.

Reportedly, the new LDF governing council said that the project was introduced by the previous UDF governing council and would look at whether there were any irregularities.

This is not the only corruption allegation against the current government. The most recent one was the deep sea fishing controversy in which Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala called out the Pinarayi government for entering into an MoU with a US-based company for deep sea fishing in the state. The state witnessed a list of controversies immediately after the pandemic which includes CMO's involvement in the sensational gold smuggling case, PSC rank list issue, back door appointments of CPM cadre in government offices and many others.
