In an incident likely to be a mistaken identity, a Keralite youth was beaten to death by a mob alleging theft at Allur village, Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Deepu, a native of Malayankeezhu in Thiruvananthapuram. Deepu’s friend, Aravind, suffered injuries in the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Reportedly, the mob mistook Deepu and Aravind as robbers, alleging that the duo had tried to break into a house and attacked them. On receiving information about the mob lynching, police arrived at the scene and rescued the two from the mob. They were rushed to a hospital where Deepu breathed his last. According to doctors, Aravind is stable.

The police are yet to ascertain whether Deepu and Aravind tried stealing and are yet to file a case in this regard. Some people, who were involved in the mob attack, have been taken into custody for questioning. Police are awaiting further details and are not sure what Deepu and Aravind were doing in Tiruchirappalli and why they came there.
