Customs set to summon Speaker Sreeramakrishnan to Kochi for questioning post hospital discharge

The Customs (Preventive wing) are set to summon Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan again for questioning after he recovers from Covid-19.

The decision was reached after investigators discovered contradictions in the statements made by Sarith PS and Swapna Suresh, the accused in the gold smuggling case, and the Speaker.

Contradicting the duo’s statement, Sreeramakrishnan told the Customs that he had given them an empty bag. The accused however claimed that the bag contained wads of currency notes. He also denied his involvement and investment in Middle East College. He claimed that Swapna was trying to trap him and that she would always attempting selfies with him.

Investigators feel that the Speaker had sought legal advice and was answering the questions accordingly.

The Speaker was questioned once at his residence on April 9. Once the Speaker is discharged from the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, he will be summoned for questioning at the Customs Headquarters in Kochi. The Speaker, who was admitted for pneumonia and Covid-19 was shifted from the ICU to his room. Doctors say that he will be discharged shortly.

Meanwhile, the Principal Sessions Court will hear the bail application of Sandeep Nair in the Enforcement Directorate registered gold smuggling case on Monday. Sandeep, although granted bail in a case registered by the National Investigation Agency, is still detained under the COFEPOSA Act.
