The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is pulling all stops ahead of the Kerala Assembly elections. Reportedly, Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be the lead campaigners for Congress in the upcoming polls.
According to a news agency, a senior Congress leader on condition of anonymity said the Congress high command is viewing the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections with utmost importance.
“Both the top leaders have in principle agreed to campaign extensively in Kerala and the first step for that would be the arrival of Rahul in Thiruvananthapuram later this month,” the Congress leader said. The leader continued, “Rahul’s visit will coincide with the conclusion of Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala’s Aishwarya Kerala Yatra. Rahul is expected to make some big announcements.”
According to this top Congress leader, Priyanka Gandhi will be visiting Kerala as part of the election campaign. “She would be travelling across the state and a lot of interest would be generated by the visit of Rahul and Priyanka," the leader said, adding that though Sonia Gandhi is the interim party president she will not be travelling to the state for campaigning. Reports also suggest that former Manmohan Singh is also expected to visit Kerala for a brief election campaign.
The Kerala elections are likely to be held in April/May. Congress bringing Rahul and Priyanka ahead of the election campaign would make the battle between the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) rather interesting. Though the LDF managed to win the 2020 local body elections, the Assembly election is likely to look quite different. During 2019 Lok Sabha elections, UDF crushed the LDF with Rahul not saying a single word against Pinarayi Vijayan’s government or the LDF. This time, the contest between UDF and LDF would be watched closely.
