In the upcoming Assembly elections, Kerala will see Anannyah Kumari Alex, the first transgender contesting as the candidate of the Democratic Social Justice party from the Vengara constituency in Malappuram. She will contest against PK Kunhalikutty, the Indian Union of Muslim League (IUML) candidate and P Jiji, the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

While interacting with a media organisation, Anannyah, who is also the first transgender Radio Jockey in Kerala, said that she wants to prove that transgender persons can be leaders too. She even added that her priority will be the safety of women and transgender people.

Vengara will witness a tight battle as a senior politician like Kunhalikutty is contesting and Anannyah's battle from a star constituency hopes to script a new history.

She said, "It is not about victory or loss. I want to represent my community and that's my aim." She even added that her battle will be marked in history. Kerala's first transgender said that she wants to mark her existence in the world and if I win, I want to uplift those people who are isolated from the mainstream.

Anannyah Kumari said that the purpose behind entering politics is to become a representative. "It is an attempt to represent the voice of a marginalised group and all my transgender friends are happy," said makeup artist cum news anchor Anannyah Kumari.

Anannyah is a native of Kollam’s Peruman. She is the foster daughter of famous celebrity makeup artist Ranju Ranjimar and an active member of Dhwayah Arts and Cultural Society, a transgender association in Kerala.
