Ahead of Valentine’s Day, this Adoor couple reminds us that age is no bar when it comes to love

Often we are reminded at our young age, that as we grow older, it gets more and more difficult to find love and marry. However, 58-year-old Rajan and 65-year-old Saraswathi prove that age is no bar to find love. At one point in their life, both believed that they would have to live the rest of their lives alone. Thanks to a change in their fate, they will get married to each other on February 14 — Valentine’s Day.

They met each other at the Mahatma Janasevana Kendram in Adoor, Pathanamthitta. The centre primarily takes care of the elderly, and it became an important point in their lives, as both have been brought here by a twist in fate. While Covid-19 brought Rajan here, the death of Saraswathi’s parents brought her to the centre.

Rajan, hailing from Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, has been working as a cook in hotels in and around Pamba, especially during the Sabarimala season. He never goes back home, instead stays here, and send money to take care of his sisters. However, following the Covid-19 lockdown, he had lost work, and the police took him to the Janasevana Kendram. Currently, he works there taking care of the elderly, cooking for them.

Adoor-native Saraswathi reached the Kendram following her parents’ death three years ago. Social workers and authorities had brought her to the centre, seeing as she had no relatives and has a speech impairment. She stayed at the centre, looking after and tending to the elderly inmates of the Janasevana Kendram.

They have informed the authorities regarding their willingness to get married and everyone is okay with it. The authorities have also promised necessary facilities for them to settle down after their marriage — including a place to stay and a job. The duo will marry tomorrow in the presence of Adoor MLA Chittayam Gopakumar, Municipality Chairman D Saji, Social Justice Officer Jaffar Khan and others in a small ceremony, following Covid-19 protocols.

Ahead of Valentine’s Day, their life reminds us that love is in the air, and age is no bar for finding love in your life.
