Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan writes to Centre seeking 1,000 tonne of oxygen, Covid vaccine doses

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting imported Liquid Medical Oxygen and Covishield and Covaxin vaccine doses to Kerala amid the Covid-19 surge. The request comes on a day when Kerala recorded its highest single-day spike with 41,953 Covid-19 cases.

Vijayan has sought 1,000 tonne imported Liquid Medical Oxygen, 50 lakh Covishield and 25 lakh Covaxin doses of Covaxin. He also requested the Centre for PSA plants, oxygen concentrators and ventilators on a priority basis.

The state collected 1,63,321 samples in the last 24 hours and the test positivity rate (TPR) is at 25.69%. The state also recorded 58 Covid-related deaths on Wednesday, taking the death toll to 5,565. The state also witnessed 23,106 recoveries.

Meanwhile, India’s top scientific advisor Dr K Vijayraghavan said that a third wave or phase 3 of Covid-19 is inevitable. “Phase 3 is inevitable, given the high levels at which this virus is circulating. But it is not clear at what time scale this third wave will occur,” Dr K Vijayraghavan informed on Wednesday.

Witnessing the Covid-19 surge and record deaths in the country, top government officials informed that a national lockdown is being discussed as the Covid-19 crisis has overwhelmed hospitals.
