Top medical advisor to US President Joe Biden and US epidemiologist Dr Anthony Fauci has said that India needs to shut down the country for a few weeks to curb the spread of Covid-19. This comes on a day when India reported a record 4,01,993 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours.

“I heard from some of the people in the street are bringing their mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers in search for oxygen. They seem to think there really was not any organization, any central organization,” Dr Fauci said.

Dr Fauci said a temporary shutdown is enough to end the transmission cycle and it is not necessary to shut down for six months. “Literally, lockdown so that you can have less spread. No one likes to lock down the country," he said, adding that it is a problem when the country locks down for six months. “But just for a few weeks of lockdown could have a significant impact on the dynamics of the outbreak,” he pointed out.
