Covid-19 second wave: Full lockdown only option due to GOI’s lack of strategy, says Rahul Gandhi

Wayanad MP and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that a complete lockdown is the only way forward as the Centre is unable to control the Covid-19 situation in India due to a lack of strategy. He also alleged the government’s inaction is “killing many innocent people”.

“I just want to make it clear that a lockdown is now the only option because of a complete lack of strategy by GOI (Government of India). They allowed, rather, they actively helped the virus reach this stage where there’s no other way to stop it,” Rahul said in a tweet, adding that a crime has been committed against India.

In an earlier tweet, Rahul said that the GOI doesn’t get it and the only way to stop the Covid-19 spread is a complete lockdown. He said that a lockdown “with the protection of NYAY for the vulnerable sections”. The Congress party had proposed the Nyuntam Aay Yojana (NYAY), a minimum income scheme, that provides a minimum of Rs 72,000 per annum as guaranteed income to poor families.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had attacked the central government, saying there was zero accountability despite the death of over two lakh people during the second Covid-19 wave.

Meanwhile, the Bihar government has announced that the state will go into a complete lockdown till May 15 due to rising Covid-19 cases. The announcement came hours after the Patna High Court directed the Nitish Kumar-led government to impose a lockdown immediately. The state has reported over 11,407 new Covid-19 cases and 82 deaths. In the past 24 hours, India has reported over 3.57 lakh new Covid-19 cases and 567 deaths.
